A successful viral marketing campaign is one of the most difficult creative challenges you can face.
Viral campaigns on creation will do one of two things, either become viral and have millions of visitors, or flop making no noise at all. For something to be viral in nature it must be either totally unique, special, controversial or all three. You can't create a "normal" viral campaign, or recycle old ideas - you need to get people talking and that's where we come in.
If you're not buying into this viral thing, consider Subservient Chicken. Weird name, even stranger concept. Launched by Burger King in 2004, Subservient Chicken is essentially a pre-recorded set of videos of a man in a chicken suit, which will play on the entering of key terms. The trick is, it looks like a live webcam feed (it fooled a lot of people) and it's so outlandish it's somewhat addictive and entertaining.
How entertaining? Well, during it's launch, Subservient Chicken attracted over 14 million unique visitors and over 25,000 links! This site is now 2nd in Google for the search term "chicken" which shows you just how powerful these natural links are. The buzz this campaign caused saw Burger report a 9% increase in footfall in outlets, per week.
